Years
Arts and Crafts - 2009

Michael Panontin
With many of his bandmates in Do Make Say Think and (formerly) in Broken Social Scene taking time to pursue their own projects of late, guitarist Ohad Benchetrit obviously decided it was his turn to put out a solo record. Years is the fruit of 18-month's labour, with Benchetrit and fellow DMSThinkster Justin Small reworking unfinished songs into twelve lush, atmospheric instrumentals. "I basically just wanted to use all of this material that I'd compiled on my hard drive," he told online Chart mag, "songs that got started and never finished, or that were parts of other projects and never really got off the ground."

The bulk of Years is predictably given over to the sort of bucolic guitar workings that made 2007's You, You're a History in Rust so fetching several years back. Still, it's when Benchetrit strays from that rustic sound that the record really heats up. 'The Major Lift', for instance, is more epic and electric, with its clarion horns and galloping drumbeat taking us into territory familiar to those who have kept pace with much of Do Make Say Think's atmospheric post-rock. But the ethereal pairing of 'Lasantha Wickrematunge' and 'September 5, October 21, 2007' is the true gem here, an almost otherworldly mix of accordion and keyboards that is stunning in its beauty and worth the price of the disc alone. Simply awesome, this one is!
