Motorists
From the Wreckage EP Planet of the Tapes - 2020

Motorists may seem to have appeared from out of nowhere, but the guys behind this Toronto trio have been jamming together for the better part of a decade and a half. The three - guitarist Craig Fahner and bassist Matt Learoyd, with Jesse Locke on the skins - trace their musical friendship all the way back to their days in Calgary. And they bring some pretty impressive CVs to the table, with Locke perhaps the best known these days for his excellent Simply Saucer book Heavy Metalloid Music and his ubiquitous drumming for the likes of Tough Age, Chandra and even a recent Simply Saucer incarnation. Learoyd plucks strings for the relatively unknown We Knew, while Fahner fronts indie pop stalwarts Feel Alright, whose sunny seven-inch 'Oahu Ohio' has to be one of the great lost Canrock singles of the millennium.
From the Wreckage is Motorists' first recording, with just six songs clocking in at a terse thirteen minutes. Much of the EP trades in the sort of hopped-up, jerky pop-punk that was so ubiquitous as the seventies were sliding into the eighties, only here the guys toss in just the right amount of jangle and harmony to take the edge off what were pretty darned humourless times. Unsurprisingly, the songs range from the merely competent to the breathtakingly great. Those looking for the latter would do well to start with the frenetic assault of 'Honey Is Flowing in All Directions' or the punchy minute-and-a-half sing-along 'Shotgun Hundy'.
From the Wreckage is cassette-only and limited to just 40 measly copies, so you probably shouldn't dawdle if you want one.
