Ah, the end of summer up here in Canuckistan, when those cool evening breezes in August ominously waft in to signal the frigid winter days ahead (except of course for those of you in the Vancouver/Victoria area, but try to humour the rest of us, please).
Feel Alright's 'Oahu Ohio' is the perfect balm for that quintessentially Canadian late-August dread. In fact, it's quite possibly one of the greatest summer singles ever. Recorded while Feel Alright's main man Craig Fahner was flitting between Montreal and Pittsburgh while pursuing his Master's degree, the effortlessly ebullient song melds bouncy guitar riffs and a positively rapturous falsetto into two minutes of pure musical bliss. This version, issued on seven-inch vinyl by the Mammoth Cave Recording Co., actually updates a previous one from Feel Alright's 2011 cassette debut hahahahahahaha, smoothing over the guitar-laden indie rock edges while at the same time gussying up the production to something more befitting summery pop music. And there are more goodies on the backside, like the upbeat 'L'esprit de l'escalier', a nod of sorts to late-sixties bubble gum music, and the shimmering 'Dark Incantations', which though equally perky sports more of a late-seventies power pop sound.
And just to keep us all believing, if only for a few more weeks, 'Oahu Ohio' entered this world on August 30th, just when we Canadians needed it most.
