Camera
Dimanche (download track) (independent) - 2024

Camera is yet another example of Montreal's amazingly fertile - and seemingly endless - experimental music scene. The relatively newish trio of Little Misty co-founder Francois Jalbert (guitars, percussion), Melanie Belair (vocals) and Aurelien Tomasi (flute, clarinet) have been together for a couple of years, and 'Dimanche' is their third recently released track.
As its name would suggest, 'Dimanche' is constructed around a lazy-Sunday walk-in-the-woods sort of vibe, in this case Jalbert's languorous acoustic guitar. Indeed, the references to nature and its balm-like qualities are everywhere: birds chirping, woodblock percussion, whirling flute and even some deftly placed Jew's harp (the latter by Robbie Kuster). Belair, who for the past five years has also played violin in Montreal's neo-classical ensemble Flore Laurentienne, adds an ethereal element with her stunning wordless vocal.
The press release makes reference to the city's "hyperactive music industry" and the group's unconscious desire for something "slower, calmer and free from commercial restraints". Those looking for an off ramp from the overpriced, overworked and overstimulated fast lane will certainly feel the benefits. But more specifically, fans of Brian Eno, classic Italian soundtracks and Ryuichi Sakamoto would do well to give this a listen.
