Lisa Taan

Lisa Taan - Simon Simon / No One 'Cep' Me - 7

Simon Simon / No One 'Cep' Me - 7"
RCA Canada International - 1967

Michael Panontin
Both sides of this obscure seven-inch come from the pen of Martin Hillman, a.k.a. Martin Martin, the Montreal producer whose sixties resume boasted such gems as Rings and Things' groovy 'Strange Things Are Happening', Mini Robin's cool mod/ye-ye corker 'Pourras-tu me pardonner' and of course his own recording, the excellent 'Just a Little Bit of 'Oh Yeah''.

Lisa Taan, or as she was sometimes known, Liza Taan, issued her contribution to the world of music in the early months of 1967. 'Simon Simon' is a weirdly exotic piece of pop that seems to simultaneously straddle the worlds of psych and folk, with its swirling guitar licks and Taan's high-pitched warble. The record got its first - and likely only - mention in the April 29th issue of RPM, with the music mag informing us that "one of the newest recording artists on the Montreal scene" arrived there by way of the Yorkville and Greenwich Village "before they turned folk-rock".

Taan obviously had bigger plans, She had assembled her own backing band and was busy arranging bookings around town at places like The New Penelope, The De Milo Room and Cafe Andre, and even as far away in New York City. But 'Simon Simon' would turn out to be Taan's only solo release. She did turn up the following year singing on the aforementioned Rings and Things disc, and 'Simon Simon' would get reissued in Belgium in 1969 - in a swell picture sleeve no less - but after that the trail goes cold.
