Maya Postepski calls Princess Century "my little secret bedroom project". The Toronto/Berlin-based producer may be much better known for her work with Katie Stelmanis as Austra as well as with Robert Alfons in TR/ST, but she is definitely at her most interesting as Princess Century.
It has been a good four years since we last heard from Princess Century. But it was certainly worth the wait, as Postepski's latest missive, 'Cosmic Minivan', is a creepy, erotic tour de force dripping with throbbing rhythms and pulsating synths that, in her own words "evoke memories of long sweaty nights dancing in seedy clubs". Released just in time for Halloween ("my favourite holiday as a kid", she writes), 'Cosmic Minivan' deftly spans the seventies, eighties and nineties, melding goth, techno and even a bit of Kraftwerk - those 'Computer World' references add an especially nice touch - into a hypnotic and hallucinatory dance track. With any luck, there is a longer remix in the offing.
And if clubbing ain't your thing, check out Laura Hypponen's excellent video for it, shot in spooky Super 8mm in Berlin and Thailand and inspired by legendary horror film master Dario Argento. Happy Halloween, indeed.
