Nutrients
Such Slime (download only single) (independent) - 2019

What started out as a basement project below Montreal's Boulevard St.-Laurent is now a full-fledged dad-rock outfit based in Toronto's west end. It was Nutrient's singer, Taylor Teeple, who took the bold step of leaving the relative comfort of The Plateau to dive into the madness of present-day T.O., with its thousand-dollar studio apartments and $600,000 teardown garages. Teeple in the meantime had amassed a pile of songs, some recorded in Quebec and others in Ontario, which the group issued on three cassette-only EPs between 2015 and 2017.
With the five-piece (Teeple along with guitarist Will Hunter, keyboardist Iulia Ciobanu, bassist Sean McKee and drummer Turner Wigginton) now firmly ensconced in the 6ix, Nutrients appears poised for bigger and brighter things. Their most recent effort, the download single 'Such Slime', is without a doubt one of the better tracks to come this way of late. It's a breezy waft of soft-pop that seems to have blown in from a couple of directions: cheesy mid-seventies yacht rock - that syrupy sax pretty well gives it away - and the subtler guitar-based pop that Postcard Records was so famous for in the early eighties. Extra points for the Rolodex, the vintage Model 2500 telephone and, of course, Battleship.
