Last Ex Constellation - 2014

Simon Trottier and Olivier Fairfield, the talented multi-instrumentalists responsible for much of the eerie imagery on Timber Timbre's recent Hot Dreams set, formed the more experimental Last Ex a couple of years back. The Quebec-based pair dusted off some unused ambient tracks, originally part of a Timber Timbre horror soundtrack that never quite saw the light of day, and entered Fairfield's own studio in Hull to flesh out music for this record.
The eleven tracks on Last Ex - three of which feature Timber Timbre's Taylor Kirk on blissed-out guitar - are all terse, evocative instrumentals of varying degrees of complexity. The haunting 'Resurrection Drive Part 1', for instance, is what Ennio Morricone might have sounded like under the tutelage of Julian House and his Ghost Box imprint. Other tracks like the quirky 'Girl Seizure' or the positively stunning opener 'Hotel Blues' check the lesser-known Krautrock catalogue, the latter especially as it weaves a curious retro synth with tense, minimal guitar, something Moebius and Roedelius might have done forty-odd years ago. Elsewhere, though, much of Last Ex seems to tread the same territory, especially Fairfield's fairly predictable drumming, and as such could probably have been pared down to an EP. Still, there is no denying that this is yet another fine addition to Constellation's already stacked roster of talent.
